New Procedures

plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, savannah, hilton head islandWe are constantly evaluating new procedures and equipment that become available in order to select the best techniques based on need and desired results. New is not necessarily better. We are committed to using the expertise, maturity and skill acquired from more than 26 years of experience to determine that best way to achieve a patient’s desired results.

Before & After Photos

It is our policy not to use Before-and-After Photos on our website or in any of our printed materials. We have made this decision for several reasons: Photos do not indicate what exactly is the result of the doctor's work. Photos can be misleading. Photos do not tell you what the patient's goals were. We do have Before-and-After Photos available by request during our cosmetic consultations. If you are interested in a particular procedure, we would also be pleased to provide comments from patients who have undergone similar surgery.

Beware The Bite

facelift, eyelid surgery, brow lift, savannahIn conjuction with the American Society of Plastic Surgery, we want to make you aware of some startling statistics concerning dog bites. Every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. seeks medical attention for a dog bite, 60% of those bitten are children. “Beware the Bite” bookmarks, with information on how to avoid dog bites, what to do if bitten, and how to be a smart dog owner, are available from my office. Please call, email or stop in if you’d like one.

"The Latest May Not Be The Greatest"
by: Robert A. Laughlin, M.D., F.A.C.S.
(as presented at the Southern Women's Show in Savannah, Georgia)

Never before have there been so many options for men and women who want to look and feel their best. New techniques, procedures and products are touted daily in the media as the latest and greatest way to improve your looks. But consumer beware! The latest is not necessarily the greatest – especially in plastic surgery. Successful results still depend on the procedure itself, the skill and experience of the physician, avoiding post-surgery complications and following the physician's instructions.

So, what’s new? Here’s the tip of the iceberg: BOTOX® injections to smooth wrinkles between the brows and at the corner of the eyes; facial wrinkle reduction that doesn’t remove the outer layer of your skin, thus allowing you to return to work after a treatment; short-scar breast surgery and endoscopic facial surgery.

And, the rest of the iceberg: “weekend” facelifts, neck suspension, lip wrinkle reductions and enlargements, fat injections and liposuction; breast reductions and uplifts with vertical closure or suctioning only; breast enlargement through suction only or just taking pills; body contouring with ultrasonic liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, mechanical fat massage (vacuuming) and circumferential body lifts; wellness plans that include “anti-aging” nutrition and exercise programs; skin peels, microdermabrasion, spider vein treatments and scar reduction; computer-imaging and photography.
From my perspective, these new techniques are a response to patients who are seeking no downtime, no pain, and non-surgical procedures – all for less expense. Some of the new procedures may be able to achieve successful results; but many may do absolutely nothing at all. So why are they offered? Physicians today are being forced to be competitive in order to survive economically, in many cases performing new procedures for physical improvement that may be completely outside their areas of expertise and training, or trying unproven procedures on unsuspecting patients. Medical devices are being sold to physicians without adequate studies to prove their effectiveness.

The good news is that there is plenty that you can do to get good results from the correct procedure. First, get informed, surf the Internet, read, talk to experienced patients. Find physicians you can trust and whose work you can see. Be sure your physician is trained, board-certified by an appropriate board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and experienced in the exact area you are concerned about. Ask important questions during the consultation; discuss options, post-op recovery and care, pain, location for procedure (hospital or in –office surgical suite), touch-up policy, costs, risk and complications, credentials and training.

My best advice to help you look your best: Be an informed consumer. Ask questions and do research until you find a physician who has your complete trust and confidence. Make your own choices; avoid the herd mentality. Remember that even if the latest procedure is not the best one for you, an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon can help you select the procedure that will provide the results you are looking for.
